What is a traffic exchange ?

A traffic exchange is a community of members who agree to visit each other website. In the beginning the function of traffic exchange is to share interesting website with fellow colleagues inside an organization back in the beginning of the internet, before the search engine era of today, dominated by Google. Around 1994-1996 traffic exchanges surfaced on the internet focusing on commercial website along with the e-commerce boom.

Most traffic exchanges are free to join, there are upgrades which gives additional benefits to members which varied between individual traffic exchanges. It is also possible to buy views to website if the member decided that he/she does not have the time to view other website and prefer to just purchase the views.

The most common usage of a traffic exchange is to boosts a website pageviews and to promote products and services to fellow member of the traffic exchange. The use of a traffic exchange to increase pageviews is a controversial one is is not allowed on Google Adsense programs, since it gives a false impression of ads views number related to CPM performance (Cost per Thousand Impression) and directly affect ads effectiveness.

A traffic exchange works by using a credit system, where members earn credits by viewing other member websites and spend credits by getting his/her website viewed by others.

The period when a member view other members websites is called a traffic exchange session. A session normally uses frames to showcase the website and allows the traffic exchange navigation bar to be shown and allows interaction between the member and the traffic exchange.

Another way to earn credit is by referring someone to the traffic exchange who then becomes your downline. You will earn a fraction of their credits, it is not much but it does help.

Many traffic exchanges also offer text links and banner links to be shown together with the website during a traffic exchange session. Therefore credits can be assigned not only to website but also to text link and banner link. This effectively increase the number of ways to get visitors to the website.

There are two types of traffic exchange:

  • Manual traffic exchange : Here, member manually viewed websites during a traffic exchange session and must confirm his/her view after 10-60 seconds time limit has passed.

  • Auto-surf traffic exchange : In this type, member does not need to do anything since the websites are automatically shown during a traffic exchange session. The time limit remains 10-60 seconds.

Which one is the best is debateable. However the disadvantage of an Auto-Surf traffic exchange is obvious, since it is on autopilot, no-one is viewing your website when it is shown. The chances of people responding to your website is next to zero.

Personally I find manual traffic exchange to be more of my type and do use them regularly. Below are my frequently used traffic exchanges, feel free to click on them and join if you like :
